In recent years I’ve become a cemetery wanderer. I enjoy the solitude of locations where the dead outnumber the living, and find cemeteries to be peaceful places to explore and make photographs. And while death always comes to mind at a cemetery, there is a lot of life to appreciate. I am especially drawn to the tall trees I frequently see, and I like to imagine them standing guard over so many sleeping souls.
I shoot a fair amount of film in cemeteries, and Lomochrome Purple seems to be a film stock I gravitate towards. I think because purple is my favorite color, but also because it’s my way of making these locations feel more alive. Infrared photography is another way I do this. The full spectrum of light has become my palette for introducing vibrant colors to solemn places. You may also see some experimentation with reflective surfaces. That can allow for creativity with colors, but also to create images that appear to be multiple exposures, when they are really single frames.
